Making It Happen

  • The Right Membership: Even if the team does not expect to change in immediate future it helps to have a clear picture of what sort of people should be in this particular team. Invite people to define what "We want", "what we don't want," and what "must we have"

  • When recruiting to the team, convert the selection process into an activity! Make it an exciting, demanding event, in which the whole team gets to know potential new recruits and make the decision jointly, with the team leader having the final say.

  • Clear objectives: Ask each team member to write their understanding of the group's current objectives. What does each person think is the Super-objective of the team?

  • How might your competitors or other departments in your organisation describe your objectives?

  • Post the team's principle aims in a highly visible place where everyone can view them daily. Alter the position of these information sheets regularly.

  • Commitment to objectives: Run a team session to identify what might get in the way of achieving the objectives. Make it an enjoyable, creative session when people think "out of their boxes" and become inventive about what might happen to stop the desired result.

  • Timescales: Objectives alone are not enough. The team needs to understand the exact timescale for achieving its various tasks. Invite all members to explore the implications of each deadline and what it means for them as individuals.

  • Highly organised working: divide team tasks into smaller chunks, so that you can energise beginnings and endings.

  • Give individual members specific roles to ensure meetings work well, from "managing the process", to good time keeping, from crystal clear agendas to prompt, action-based minutes.
