Making It Happen
Values: explore how 'values-driven' you are as a team. Discuss values regularly, not just annually. Check for signs of the values in day-to-day working. For example in the working environment, relationships, product and organisation.
Commitment to values: What proportion of the team is currently committed? What would have to change for everyone to be 100% committed?
Powerful vision: Start a conversation with colleagues to practice articulating the vision - however vague. Is it the team's vision, or just the leader's? The process of everyone talking about it in their own way, will help the team to refine and eventually own the vision.
Find a visual way of representing the vision - a symbol, logo or object - and use it on notepaper and memo pads etc.
Clear Leadership: Different team members may lead on certain tasks or issues. Question and clarify who is responsible for leading and actioning specific decisions. Don't take the shared leadership for granted.
Leaders become isolated, needing support and feedback on, their performance. Create formal mechanisms for the leader to receive regular, not sporadic feedback.
